Golestan Palace in Tehran

Edifice of the Sun or Shams al Emareh

The Edifice of the Sun is considered one of the most beautiful buildings of the Golestan Palace in Tehran. Locally it is known as as Shams al Emareh. This building is a mix blend of the European and Persian architectural traditions. Nasser al-Din Shah was behind the construction of this building, he wanted to have this building built high so he could enjoy the views of the city. It was designed by master architect Moayer al-Mamalek and built between 1865 and 1867. The exterior of this building is very beautiful and it is richly decorated.

Interior

Extensive use of the glass and marble work inside the Shams al Emareh building makes it very unique. Ceiling has also glass mirrors which reflect the lights. Exterior of the Edifice of the Sun has plenty of windows and balconies for viewing (though off limits to visitors.

The Windcatchers Building or Emarat e Badgir

The Emarat e Badgir (also known as the Building of Windcatchers). The entrance looks small but it is beautifully decorated. Bright colours are used to make this building standout from the rest. At the front of Emarat e Badgir ceiling is supported by tall but thin columns. Recently restored Emarat-e Badgir has one of it’s own league in Persian architecture.

his building was erected in the reign of Fath Ali Shah, few changes were made to this building during the reign of Nasser al Din Shah. Stained glass is used to enhance the beauty of this building.

Interior

The interior has typically ostentatious mirror work. One room has few paintings which are created with the European style. The main room in the building is decorated with sash-windows. Large and small mirrors create a dazzling beauty of lights and colours inside the building. Diamond Hall or Talar e Almas is located next to the Building of Windcatchers but it was closed on that day.
