Badajoz is a photogenic border city of Spain. It has many historic buildings which offer an opportunity to look into the past of this city. To start with, the Plaza Reyes Catolicos is situated next to the Puerta de Palma (Door of Palms). Beside this historical gate and bridge, Ronda de Circunvalación Reina Sofia is built on the western bank of the River Guadiana. In the past, city walls of Badajoz were connected all the way to the Door of Palms.
The Three Poets sculpture sits at a roundabout, close to Puente Autonomia. These three poets of Badajoz are Manuel Pacheco, Jesus Delgado Valhondo and Luis Alvarez Draper. Next to the sculpture of Three Poets sits a small building known as Ermita de Pajaritos. This building could be of the Muslim period in Badajoz.
La Giraldilla
It is a building to replicate the Giralda Tower in Seville. Built in 1935, it occupies the place left by the first hermitage of Solitude (17th century). Front door of the Banos Arabes y Masajes Baraka is richly decorated. It is great to see that Badajoz is reviving its heritage which at one stage seemed to be forgotten. Further along, Calle Virgen de la Soledad which is covered to avoid direct sunlight into the street. This street connects Edificio La Giralda (Plaza de la Soledad) with Plaza de Espana.
Cathedral of Badajoz
Plaza de Espana is a central square in Badajoz and it contains some of the finest buildings of the city. One of them is Ayuntamiento de Badajoz. In front of the Town Hall, there is a monument dedicated to Luis de Morales. The Cathedral of San Juan is also situated in the Plaza de Espana. It was built in the 13th century on the site of a mosque. The church has always stood outside the citadel and this is one of the reasons why its external walls are very high. The base of the tower looks older than the rest of the building, it may belonged to the last building which stood here.
Gate of el Pilar
Puerta del Pilar was built in 1692 to replace the medieval gate of Santa Marina. On the outer facade, there is a coat of arms of King Charles II and the Count of Montijo. In the past, a chapel stood here with the name of Lady of El Pilar, which gave the name to this gate. This door also have a drawbridge which was used to control people and goods to the city.
A statue of Jose Moreno Nieto in the Plaza Minayo. He was attorney and Professor of the University of Granada, was a president of the Cultural club of Madrid.
Park of Plaza de San Francisco
Plaza de San Francisco is one of the main parks of the city, it covers more than ten thousand square meters. In the past, a convent had existed here with the same name. This monument inside the park shows Vasco Nunez de Balboa, who was a Spanish conquistador and explorer who was the first European to see the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean in 1513. Francisco Pizarro was a Spanish conquistador, who captured and killed Atahualpa of the Inca Empire. The park is a great place to enjoy and have fun because it offers newsagents, cafes, restaurants and gardens. The Santa An Biblioteca Publica Municipal is a public library which is situated in the Santa Ana Square. Covering an area of 557 m2 this library opened in 2014.
