Egyptian Museum of Antiquities is located on the famous Tahrir Square in Cairo. The current Museum of Egyptian Antiquities was established in 1902 and it displays over 120,000 items. One plaque in the garden commemorates the museum’s 111th anniversary which took place on 1st of November 2013.
Photographs inside the museum were not permitted (very strict rules) – I was happy enough to photograph the displays in the garden. There is a tomb of Auguste Mariette in the courtyard of the museum. He was a French scholar, archaeologist and Egyptologist, and founder of the Egyptian Department of Antiquities. He died in Cairo on January 19, 1881.
There were no labels so it was hard to figure out the names of all the items on display. This area is surrounded by tall blocks of the buildings and just beyond these buildings flows the River Nile. This museum seems to be very popular with the school kids. I saw several groups of them, in and around the museum on that day.
