Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem is located to the east of the Kidron Valley, at the foot of the Mount of Olives. Jesus and his disciples used to visit this garden and sometimes they would sleep in a nearby grotto. This garden is famous for Jesus’s prayer before his arrest by the Romans. At this site, Jesus prayed on the night of His betrayal and arrest (Mark 14:32-50). According to the record in Luke, Jesus’ despair in Gethsemane was so deep that He sweat drops of blood (Luke 44-22:43).
Olive Trees
Some of the old old olive trees’ stock trace back to Jesus’s times and their DNA had matched up to 2000 years old original trees. The original trees were cut down by the Roman soldiers in 70AD to use the wood for their siege engines. Some of the trees are from the 12th century. A railing goes around the trees to protect them because in the past visitors used to take their branches for blessings.
