Less Visited Monuments in Alexandria

Tomb of al-Abbas al-Mursi

al-Mursi’s original name was Shahab al-Din and he was born in Murcia, al-Andalus (Spain). From al-Andalus, al-Mursi moved to Tunisia and later he stayed and died in Alexandria. Even though he came from a wealthy family in the trading business and was well educated in religious studies.

Inside the room there are only two graves but Arabic on the grave suggests that his two sons were buried there also.

There was a small complex which housed three graves at the back of the al-Mursi Mosque but there were no information about the people buried there. There was a caretaker there who let me in as long as I gave him a donation. The area was surrounded by palm dates but area was neglected.

Also known as the Mermaid Monument, it is built in front of the Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandria). It is a symbol of modern Alexandria but one can see few ruins from the Roman era in the city.

The Alexandria Naval Unknown Soldier Memorial

It is dedicated to the unknown soldiers who lost their lives in the sea battles. It is located at the El Gondy El Maghool Square of Manshaya district.  It used to house the statue of Ismail Pasha (Khedive Ismail) but his statue was replaced in 1952 with the current one. It was built to honour the sailors who lost their life in the Battle of Navarino.
