Mosques in Fez are an integral part of the city and people’s daily life. They are not only places of worship but also masterpieces of the Moroccan architecture. In the Andalus quarter of the medina, a beautiful mosque was built at the same time as the Kairaouine. In 818 many people fleeing the riots of Córdoba left al-Andalus and took refuge in Morocco. Having settled on the right bank of the Wadi Fez, these new inhabitants would soon participate in the construction of a huge mosque that would bear their name.
Al-Hamra mosque in Fez comes from 1350, though recently renovated. It is in wonderful condition and it reflects a window into the 14th century construction of the Marinid period.
Bab Boujloud Mosque stands on the opposite side of the famous Gate of Boujloud. It is beautiful mosque with an entrance facing the bab. There are few small doors on the side of the mosque as well. Chrabliyine Mosque is from the Marinid period in Fez, built in 1342. The area around the mosque is known as Chrabliyine.
