The Municipal Market of Loule is situated at the Praca da Republica Street, beside the Camara Municipal. This market is one of the very first purpose built building in Loule in the 20th century. Inaugurated on 27th June 1908, this market was built on neo-Arab architectural style. An old city wall used to exist here, but their demolition paved the way for this building. The main entrance of the building is shaped like a horse shoe arch (Arab architecture). Opening days of the this market are from Mon-Sat and it tends to be very busy on the weekend.
Local Products
Portuguese people love seafood and there was plenty to choose from in this market. Most of the fish on sale comes from local areas but some had been imported from other countries too. Inside the market, some of the stalls were selling fresh fruit and vegetables. Freshly baked bread, rolls, cakes, pastries and sandwiches were also available. One of the best was the Torta de Laranja (Orange Pie), it looked very delicious and I couldn’t resist the temptation to try it out. Pastel de Nata is a famous Portuguese egg tart pastry and it was started by the monks at the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon.
