The Panorama 1453 History Museum in Istanbul opened to the public on the 31st January 2009 at the Topkapi Culture Park. In the opening ceremony, then President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan participated. The museum is now offering its visitors to relive the experience of the morning of the 29th of May 1453 when the Conquest of Istanbul took place. The museum offers 3D images and to the accompaniment of the Ottoman military marching music (Mahtar).
The 1453 Battle of Constantinople
Built around a platform, a massive dome is painted on all sides with a 360° depiction of the siege. It brings visitors to that those moments when this historic event took place over the city walls. The detail include the scenes of sword fights, Byzantine archers firing from atop the walls, soldiers pouring down hot wax onto their enemies. Giant siege engines carrying marauding Turks, and literally hundreds of other figures create a feast for the eyes. In the foreground are replicas of the cannons used to attack the wall. To the west, the conquering Sultan is riding a white horse. Mehmet II cuts a noble figure as he surveys the destruction of the walls with grim satisfaction.
The most important feature of the Museum, which has been established on 3000 square meters. On display is 650 square meters of the illustration is 3D. An area of 14 square meters has actual cannonballs, gun carriages, powder barrel imitations inserted. All in all, it gives a great feel to that historic event and one could feel living through it.
