The Plaza Alta is a square, situated next to the Alcazaba of Badajoz. It connects to Plaza of San Jose through an arch. It is a rectangular square lined by arches which support buildings decorated in traditional Mudéjar motifs in various colors. This structure is a combination of the colours, geometric beauty and the elegance. This square was built in 1681 and it is one of the most iconic images of Badajoz city. The Association of the Old Town of Badajoz is located inside this square. Torre Espantaperros is one of the most famous towers of the Alcazaba of Badajoz. There are some wonderful views of the tower from this square.
Moorish Houses
The Moorish Houses are located inside the San Jose Square. These are one of the oldest surviving houses in Badajoz. There are two houses with white façade, preceded by a portico with arches horseshoe-shaped brick, supported on stone columns. During the Muslim period, the Plaza San Jose was the old souk (bazaar). A statue of Juan Marin of Rodenzo stands to the left side of the Plaza Alta. Juan Marin was the bishop of Badajoz between 1681-1706.
