Saraye Moshir Caravanserai of Shiraz is a typical in it’s layout and design, like any other historical caravanserai in Iran. It has shops built around a central courtyard and also on the upper level. There are stairs which lead to the upper section of the caravanserai. In the past, this caravanserai was used as a sleeping quarters for the traders and also shops at the bottom were used to sell or store their wares.
Saraye Moshir Caravanserai Today
In 1969, Saraye Moshir was renovated and tile work was re-laid. This is the best place for buying handicraft or see the local craftsmen how they make these handicrafts. I was surprised to see the quantity and quality of the antiques on display at the Saraye Moshir. Open area in the middle of this caravanserai was a treat because it is less crowded and it also had orange trees laden with the fruit in the courtyard of the Saraye Moshir. An old man with his gun is one of the most celebrated figure at the Saraye Moshir. There were three girls who wanted to take photos by wearing his ammunition belt. When one of them saw my camera pointed at her, she shied away (ah, eastern beauties).
